Description

Taste the Stars (of Slovenian Gastronomy)

Embark on a culinary journey through diverse flavours and spectacular landscapes of Slovenia. As one of the most sustainably oriented and green countries  in  the  world Slovenian gastronomy is  a  true  treat  for  foodies and wine lovers. It is where the Alps, the Mediterranean, the Karst and the Pannonian  Plain  meet.

Thanks to excellent chefs that put Slovenia on the world´s gastronomic map Michelin Guidebook, the gastronomy red bible, was published in 2020. As an additional proof of our excellence Slovenia gained prestigious title “European Region of Gastronomy in 2021”. Yet another reason to visit.

Both traditional and haute cuisine put emphasis on high-quality, locally-produced ingredients and seasonality which guarantees richness of flavours. Chefs and locals live in harmony with the rhythm of nature. We stand behind the principle ‘from  the  garden,  field,  and  forest  to  the  table’. Foraging and use of wild and herbal plants has been part of our cuisine for centuries.  This  is  why  we  eat  such  good  food  and  contribute  to  a  sustainable future.

Day 1: Ljubljana, meeting point (Hotel Vander 4*)

Karst & Vipava valley

Foodies will be amazed on every Wanderlux tour as culinary tradition plays such an important role in our region. The best way to immerse yourself into a new country is through local foods and strolling through the farmers markets.

We meet in Ljubljana old town that was recognizes as one of the top food destinations in the world. Do not miss its colorful daily farmers market and weekly “Open kitchen” event on Fridays where you can mingle with locals.

From Ljubljana we head towards Karst. Our first stop is stone village of Štanjel, an architectural gem, and a monument of Slovenian cultural heritage dating back to middle ages. We explore the underground of traditional prosciuterria and taste their home-made delicacies. We continue our journey to fertile and and wine-rich Vipavska valley. Whole area and its idyllic rural scenery offer outstanding gourmet treats that can also be combined with outdoor activities (ask for additional biking or hiking options). It is hard to leave but we are off to see how centuries old tradition of winemaking reflects at biodynamic wine-growing estate. Vineyards are the heart of Guerilla farm where they planted mostly local varieties. We enjoy wine tasting in their modern estate with spectacular views over Vipava valley.

To round up our day we “Taste the Stars” at recently awarded Michelin star restaurant Gostilna pri Lojzetu. Beautifully placed dining area within Zemono castle is run by the fourth generation, Chef Tomaž Kavčič. Every single dish in the restaurant is enveloped with the rich local tradition.

After intense and full day of local experiences we return to Ljubljana in the late afternoon.

Day 2: Bohinj, Bled, Radovljica

Today we are off to explore abundant, green and waterfull alpine area of Bohinj and Bled lakes.  Alpine cuisine is where flavorful dishes come from high altitude mountain pastures and fertile valleys. Our first stop is Bohinj lake within Triglav national park. On a surface of crystalline lakes, you can admire reflection of limestone peaks and green meadow. This is also where local farmers herd their cattle every summer and where best Slovenian cheeses come from. We stop at local agritourism and learn about tradition of cheesemaking. While in the Alps, one must try Mohant cheese, spicy curd cheese and Bohinjska Zaska (pork mash with sausage) real farmers dish. After genuine rural experience we continue on to enchanting Bled lake. This is the prettiest lake in the Alps, with a tiny 15th-century chapel perched on an island in the center with a dramatic medieval castle rising overhead. We absorb this beautiful haven with ‘Pletna’ boat ride on Lake Bled to the island monastery. It is Bled where Yugoslavian president Tito had his summer retreat and invited to enjoy this natural beauty with world dignitaries.

“Taste the Stars”. No visit of alpine Slovenia (Gorenjska) can be done without visiting another Slovenian Michelin star Uroš Štefelin, Chef at Vila Podvin and co-creator of the culinary stories of Alpine Slovenia. Uroš challenge himself by discovering forgotten local ingredients and creating new dishes in his own unique way. We enjoy his tasting menu in the shade of old trees.

After our 2 days gastronomy and cultural pampering we stretch our legs with a lovely late afternoon walk in medieval Radovljica town before returning to Ljubljana. If you still have a little space in your tummy, we can show you another beautiful gelato spot just in the hearth of this charming town. One last scoop of dark chocolate as Farwell?
